How to get a rebate on home appliances

The federal government wants to help you buy a new refrigerator. Here’s how to take advantage of a program that gives you cash for replacing inefficient appliances.

The government’s Cash for Clunkers auto rebate program is over, but the appliance rebate starting early this year could give Americans some cash back on other purchases.

The Energy Star rebate program, passed last February as part of the American recovery and Reinvestment Act, will give rebates to consumers who replace certain home appliances with energy-efficient models. The program was designed to stimulate the sagging economy as well as conserve energy by taking inefficient appliances out of commission, a spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Energy said, the agency administering the program.

“It was a triple goal,” they say. “To increase energy efficiency, give a break to consumers in this economy and give a boost to the appliance industry.”

Refrigerator water filters (cartridge replacement)

When the light on the inside of the door goes from green to red on most refrigerators with a water filter built in, it says that we need to replace the refrigerator water filter. Most of today’s refrigerators have built in water filters to clean the water for ice and cold drinks. We own a Kenmore Model #106.56703500 side-by-side refrigerator that takes Model #9030 replacement refrigerator water filters.

A lot of the Kenmore appliances are built by Whirlpool. This bit of information is quite handy when you go searching for your water filter replacement cartridge. Apparently there are many different water filters on the market and they fit an assortment of makes and models.

First I checked the prices at Sears and found that it would be $49.98 for a new water filter plus shipping . Needless to say that seemed a bit pricey for me so I started looking around for another source. I was pleasantly surprised to find that Amazon Replacement Refrigerator Water Filters has quite a selection of replacement refrigerator water filters.

I just purchased the Whirlpool 4396710P PUR Side By Side Refrigerator Push Button Cyst Reducing Water Filter, 2-Packquick turn water filter cartridge exchange from Amazon for $63 with Free shipping. That’s just under $32 each and I ordered them from the comfort of my home. $63 per year (they recommend changing the filters ever 6 months) seems fairly reasonable to have filtered water from our refrigerator.
