Bamboo Flooring (how to)

Sunday, December 27, 2009

Installing bamboo is straight forward and easy process for a fantastic home improvement. You can install bamboo floors above or below grade and on top of wood or concrete. If installing on a cement floor, glue down application is your best bet. Work in small sections, connecting the boards as you go. Using certain flooring tools to ensure a tight fit. bamboo flooring choices

Otherwise, bamboo flooring can be nailed down or you can create a floating floor as strips snap together on top of a layer of foam.  A horizontal cut will give you a wider strip versus a narrow vertical cut. A horizontal cut usually shows more bamboo markings. Bamboo is also easy to maintain, but like wood, it can dent or scratch. It stays fresh looking by sweeping with a soft broom and mopping with natural cleaners. Look closely at your products warranty, because most suppliers offer a lifetime structural warranty and a 15-year finished warranty. Buy a scratch repair kit and burn repair kit from the flooring company you used.

Lets face it folks, everyday we live and coexist in our homes and everyday becomes another chance to do one small thing to repair or replace something that requires our attention for diy home  improving the pace we live in. Interestingly enough we are all guilty of being ignorant, but realizing that this word simply only implies that we have a lack of information. Due to the fact that watching TV is mostly wasting our precious time, some shows actually give us information! And using this info is creating thoughts of production and these thoughts can turn into reality if and win they are put into action.diy closet organizer

Take an average 8x2x8 foot bedroom closet, and add a sheet of 3/4″ plywood , a 1-1/2″ closet pole and some  finish nails. Now in a few hours time that very disorganized closet went from extremely cluttered and messy, to, very diy organized and neat, with a place and exact spot for your everyday diy lives.

Diy dryrot water damage

It’s an age old symptom of many of our homes to get dryrot water damage, IE, when anything in your home is getting excessively water or wet during inclimate weather over any period of time you will end up with dryrot water damage. A quick and simple inspection during watering times via your sprinklers or when it is raining, take a walk through and watch how the water is running and getting into rain gutters and off you roofs for example. If your grass watering is actually watering the house more than necessary, just about all species of wood will end up looking like this dryrot water damage image here.Dryrot wood damage

The DIY exterior repair at your homes as of today is to alter and or tone down those watering habits! Getting only wet, what should be growing and not getting wet everything else. To avoid dryrot water damage, start at your yards and patios and when building that next outdoor project take in mind that every square inch of space requires some kind of slope as to push moisture off and down into the drains!

Vinyl Replacement measurement’s

Before we learn how to install replacement windows it’s a must to get the dimensions correct. The existing window whether a aluminum or wood sash, they both have 2 measurements in every opening. Industry standards make the width before the height, in other words a window call out numbers that are 3-0 x 5-0, tells me it’s three feet wide by five feet high.Fitting retro replacement window in wood frameThis cross section illustrates the inside bevel being the lower point of the new replacement window, and the top is square, so pull the tape to get both measurements and if not exactly the same then use the smaller dimension. To avoid having any extra work later on this is very important. The existing window jamb after removing all the sashes and parting beads (milled divider) gives you a block number to use and the manufacturer will make it square.

Seal Grout

We are golden and got all the tile set in the new shower/tub surround complete. So it’s time to now grout all of it and we went with a unsanded type. Even though our ceramic tiles in this bathroom will be notably grout less compared to some because we have actually put them in the butt together application, which essentially means little to no visible grout lines, we still need to use grout to fill any and all tiny voids to avoid any moisture from getting behind the surface of the tile’s.1/8" spacers (tile)

This illustration shows a 1/8″ tile spacer application, 1/4″ will be another typical set up. But there are tiles specifically designed to use with no spacers and some tiles you can use with or without the spacers if you would rather see less of those semi thick grout lines. This process will allow us to obtain about 1/16″ of grout with a color we choose that blends in more than stands out. Once the grout has dried and cured it will get a brushed on grout sealer that will aide in its longevity and hue.

Our goal to the reader is to give them a nudge in the right direction, help to allow them the freedom of not being forced to phone the plumber per say , when if empowered with the right tools of know how, they will have a little extra after all the bills are paid and peace of mind with the direction this economy has gone, we just bought them 30 more days of a chance to right the proverbial ship.

In every facet of construction the chaulking gun is there, this highly versatel home improvement tool has covered so many bases and rear ends in time that they could charge 10 times what they do and make them out of titanium. Painters, plumbers, roofers and carpenters to name just a few, have relied on the next job and the next job to keep coming because they were successful in their past performance. Their name and reputation depends on it. The tools they use time and time again help make this reality. For all the potential DIYer’s out there use that gun with pride and conviction and understand what a true MBT is made of.

PS: all asking about liquid nails, we prefer beats nails because its water resistant and as a rule less expensive with the same tested performance as the other. As an insurance to the fasteners this adhesive helps in areas to huge to mention today. so stay tuned………..

Replacing the faucet

The hard water deposits have built up to the point that even if you could find the cold handle as a do it yourself plumbing repair project, it will still be an embarrassment to the eye’s. So remove and replace will be the long term value here.

Open the cabinet doors and find the angel stops or water supply valve’s, shut off both the hot and cold supplies. Take the small adjustable wrench or channel locks and undo the fitting at the valve’s as well as the faucet. to reach the fixture side of the water lines a basin wrench may be needed. Now unscrew the fixture nuts that fasten the do it yourself plumbing fixture to the counter top and lift straight up. If there is a pop-up assembly attached to the drain lines below just remove the small nut behind the 1/4″ rod the goes straight back towards the wall. Put a towel down or small bucket to catch any remaining water, from dripping onto the base of the inside of the cabinet. DIY Plumbing repair

Okay so far? It’s out and needs to match the new DIY fixture as far as supply lines centers so there is no messing with the cabinet top. Now back and ready to install the new faucet, it’s all about repeating this process in reverse order. Only thing left is to be sure and seal at the counter top with silicone being the best, some cultured counter tops are not compatible with the oil in plumbers putty and will eat away at the materials to cause trouble later on. This type of project is not super easy but be patient and check for leaks for certain before grabbing that cold one! Way to go…….
