How to weatherstrip A DOOR [DIY]

Saving dollars make more sense than anything these days, so by weatherstripping an exterior door correctly, indeed you will save money by keeping the cold air out in the winter time, as well as during the hot summer months, not “trying to cool off the whole neighborhood”. Mother knows best perhaps, and will often remind us of this.

From door bottoms or door shoe applications, all will effectively seal the interior from the exterior. But before installing either of these there hes to be a threshold on the floor first. Tools required for door weather stripping can be as simple as a hacksaw and a reversible drill/driver and a tape measure. full wrap door bottom 1 3/4"Buying the right one is important to note here, typically an interior door will be 1 3/8″ thick and exterior doors are thicker at 1 3/4″. The anodized aluminum comes in several finishes so you can choose a match per the rest of the doors hardware.

measuring from top of installed thresholdIt’s possible you may have to cut the door down a little, depending on the existing conditions. An accurate measurement is required to get the most out of your diy door sealing efforts, but on a scale of difficult being a 10, this door weather strip installation is rated at a 3. All products bought can vary so be sure to read the manufacturer’s instructions first. Entry doors have that sweet closing sound with shutting and you will know the difference after your done. Baldwin Lockset installation DIY

There are two sizes of Baldwin mortise bodies that are commonly used on conventional residential doors as shown below. You determine which one is right for you by how much room you have on your door “lock stile” and which trimset you have selected. General door hardware specs that any DIY’er CAN DO!

The illustration below is a Baldwin mortise body with a 2.5″ backset. This means that the CENTER of whatever trimset style you select will be 2.5″ from the edge of your door. This body must be cut into the door’s edge approx 3.75″ deep. You will need to drill approx. 5,   3/4″ holes centered on the doors edge 3 1/2″ deep and remove whats left with a sharp 3/4″ wood chisel.

How to Case and Base a room

Choosing these combination will seem like a no brainer, but fact is few of us tend to know the general rules of the right combo’s that will bring the professional finish carpentry results. Every milled type of moulding’s come with 3 basic dimensions, the thickness of, the width of and of course the length of material needed to complete a room and it’s trim moulding.plinth block application

A prime example of coordinating a door’s casing and the floor base moulding is we never what the base moulding’s thickness profile to protrude past the door [or cased opening] casing. A 1/2″x 2-1/2″ x 8′ door casing moulding, the first dimension being the thickness, this measurement is from where it sits flat on the door jamb and how far it’s thickest point will come away from the wall or into the room. Where a flooring base moulding thickness being generally the same, should not protrude away from the wall and into the room past the door casing. Rule of metrics here would be to select a baseboard thickness to IE., 3/8″ thick so after the installing of your finish carpentry trim moulding, the baseboard is allowed a place to end and set behind 1/8″ the vertical casing door jamb leg. Now on occasion a plinth block may be incorporated to cancel out this general finish carpentry rule. And that my friends will be for another whole other blog post.

WESTERN EAVE DEMO

When 1×6 ship-lap pine starter board has been used for the exposed end of your roofs overhang eave’s, often these get water damaged over time and require removing and replacing, along with the fascia board section. Termites are lazy by nature and will go after the moist, wet [weathered] areas first. In often cases the 2x fascia boards take the worst of this because of the bogus or lack of proper metal drip edge flashing, or applied incorrectly. If the drip edge roof metal flashing is tight against the fascia board, then the moisture from rain and damp nights cannot drip free to the ground or into the rain gutter. This causes the wooden eave to absorb the moisture and start the water damage process of ill effects and termite nesting.cedar shake eave fascia board repair

Tools needed to begin the repairs include an electric reciprocating saw, prybar, hammer and a good exterior paint primer. Cut back to the next roof tail rafter on either end and remove fascia board. Raise any roofing materials for access to the exposed eave starter sheathing. The Sawzall with a 12″ blade can aide your reach here for the other required cuts needed. When and if the drip edge metal is in your way, take a pair of sheet metal snips and cut this flashing back. A thorough inspection of the 30lb felt roofing paper is very important and any nail holes need to be patched in the felt paper before this has been completed. Once you have matched the cuts for any replacement fascia board, starter board etc., back primer all new and old cuts and parts you will be installing. Give Amazon a few days on your orders or purchase and print your receipt for your quicker trip to any home improvements depots in your area. Don’t forget those safety goggle’s!

RE-place a Single DOOR Jamb Leg

Tuesday, January 19, 2010

Having been there done that on many occasions, it’s likely a lot of you are in the same predicament. Then let us get started on removing and replacing a single door jamb leg. Door jambs consist of 3 parts, the head or header piece of jamb and the 2 door jamb legs. The hinge side jamb leg is where all the strength typically is and the header section rarely gets much abuse.

But the jamb leg where the lockset strike plate exist, is effectively where the brunt of the damage usually occurs. Interior door jambs will differ from exterior door jambs. Note: images at left show both interior and exterior door jamb varieties. An exterior door jamb typically will be thicker and milled for actual door placement. Interior door jambs typically are one flat solid stock of 3/4″ pine, but will also come in finger joint paint grade materials for cost effectiveness per lineal foot, for the end buyer/user.

door jamb variations [diy]The replacement process is generally the same for any wood framed door jamb, remove both sides of the doors trim [casing] on the applicable door jamb leg. If you get these off without damaging you should be able to reuse them. Pull the nails through the back side of the casing so you won’t be harming the casing face, for appearance reasons.  Now, before the original installer sets the jamb, they are cut to size and pre-assembled, meaning there should be nails or screws where the head meets the legs. Knowing this will save you time and further repairs, thus they must be cut, prior to removal. Using a reciprocating saw or [sawsall] with a metal blade to cut the hidden fasteners.

Once this is out and away, you can now cut your new jamb leg and install with 1-1/2″ to 3″ finish brads for the best results. Shim in place from both sides and let the door tell you where the jamb should be exactly placed by following the common door[s] spacing margins. Add a few extra reinforcing nails around the hinge[s] and or strike plate areas without placing each individual nail/brad in the same wood grain line. Trust me, this will weaken this commodity more than help..another diy home finish carpentry repair well done from another DIY’er. GREAT JOB!

interior sliding door

posted by DI-Myself

Sliding doors have been used since the first century in Roman houses, which were discovered in Pompeii, Italy by Archaeologists. A interior sliding door is a type of door which opens horizontally by sliding. There are many types of sliding doors. Sliding doors are commonly used for shower doors, glass doors and wardrobe doors. Enough of the word “Doors” already. Let’s talk about a wardrobe fixer-upper. Sliding Doors have multiple uses. My sliding door for my closet, is a mirrored door which I can use for checking out my outfit, doing my hair, applying makeup, etc. Anything you would use a normal mirror for. Another use for my mirror is for hiding all my dirty clothes so my room gets the impression as “clean”. On my mirrored closet sliding door, It has a gold frame finish. On the inside, my dad put shelfs and racks to keep it more organized. Which is a good cheap renovation (He just told me it only cost about 50$).

In my opinion, A sliding glass door is much better than a cheap curtain on your shower or bath. A curtain can get stained and dirty, which means it needs to be washed (unless you like dirty shower curtains, which is fine by me..i guess). So think about investing in a Sliding Glass Door for your bathroom. Or, for your entrance to your backyard/patio. If the Romans did it, so can you. GOOD LUCK!

Interior sliding doors (wardrobe)

Interior Sliding door (pocket door)

One of the most common ways to create space is to install a interior sliding door or pocket door. This very popular interior door type allows every bit of privacy with no restraints or limits per the swing factor. The conventional swinging door always needs the space behind itself when opened, to have clearance in the room it opens into. But an interior sliding door alleviates this restriction because it will slide into the actual wall that it’s installed.interior (pocket) sliding door Any door made can be used in this application, and we have found in many cases, the interior sliding door is just the answer to many design issues.

Every home improvement center carries the in wall frames as well as most of your applicable hardware to be used. The frame goes in line with the wall to become part of the wall and and pocket for the door to hide open into. When choosing the width size keep in mind the doors width requires the equal amount of free space to enable it’s performance.

repair running toilet

How many times in or life times will we have to repair running toilet, hey does it really matter? The point is nobody really wants to deal with this stuff but all of life’s burdens are kind of a blessing in disguise. Even the most important man of his time ended up getting sucked into something he did not want to do, and with that being said the real only other alternative is having to be no longer here! Seriously though, if it’s not a toilet maybe it’ll be something with the car or possibly a conflict with another country on a much larger scale. I’m saying our coping mechanisms, as humans do most of the work and to put into perspective, our perceptions of truly just how horrible a little out of the way trouble is’nt mostly that bad at all. At least you still have your brain to aide in most predicaments good or bad, some lesser fortune individuals only dream they had the gift to solve anything, let alone a more often time’s than not, simple toilet that won’t stop leaking! Be grateful and persevere and dream of way better tomorrow’s….Be happy and repair that running toilet, it could be way worse, right?

Int. French Doors

A pair of double doors in an opening exists in many homes, interior wood doors such as french doors are very popular because of the false depths perception it achieves, designers often incorporate these to create an open environment in tight quarters. A home office need alleviates any privacy issues as well as a den or rumpus room.open single pane with trasnomtrue divided light (french doors)interior french doors Also allowing true division of light to brighten up those darker rooms. The extra airy allowance helps to create larger spacing for smaller areas.

We can keep a close eye on the children, while toning down the noise factor during that important phone call. Having one door active with the other being secured or inactive helps also, transom options will give every new remodel that look of elegance and help break up the monotony. Paint or stain grade interior french doors will continue to have there place for a long long time in our opinion, sleek and beautiful.
