Int. French Doors

Monday, November 2, 2009

A pair of double doors in an opening exists in many homes, interior wood doors such as french doors are very popular because of the false depths perception it achieves, designers often incorporate these to create an open environment in tight quarters. A home office need alleviates any privacy issues as well as a den or rumpus room.open single pane with trasnomtrue divided light (french doors)interior french doors Also allowing true division of light to brighten up those darker rooms. The extra airy allowance helps to create larger spacing for smaller areas.

We can keep a close eye on the children, while toning down the noise factor during that important phone call. Having one door active with the other being secured or inactive helps also, transom options will give every new remodel that look of elegance and help break up the monotony. Paint or stain grade interior french doors will continue to have there place for a long long time in our opinion, sleek and beautiful.

Cornice Crown

All interior wood doorsinterior door cornice crown have some finish trim to accentuate it’s appearance. The casing that wraps  around and encompasses the interior door on both sides can be fairly simplistic or architecturally     ornate with several different looks. The DIYer can perform these with a miter saw and a hammer.

Easy steps for beautiful options. Step #1: Choose the look and materials. Step #2: Make your margin overlay (reveal) marks onto the jamb. Step#3: Cut the side casing’s and install, the head piece often will layout to outside and even with total width of casing. Step#4: Cut and install the parting bead 1″ longer than the casing, at lower head piece, all of these can be cut square and is the easiest, but a 45 degree return will enable no end grain exposure. Step #5: cut and install the crown head piece at 45 degree’s 2″ longer than casing. Use wood glue at the end return pieces as the nail’s will tend to split them.

Plane like a PRO

Hanging interior wood doors is an art form that the artisans take very seriously. Just as a writer see’s his stories as a reflection of himself, the door hanger leaves behind his mark at every opening. This wont make anyone god like for sure, it means simply having the knowledge to understand the difference.power adjustable door plane

The average proper plane bevel is 3 degree’s, at this very slight angle the thickness of the door (1/38″) is allowed the swinging arc when closing, having the clearance needed for the door after the closed position, leaving a small enough gap margin between the door and the jamb. 1/8″ inch even gap margin for interior doors, that’s all the way around. Porter Cable has a porta-plane that professional door hangers use, and they are the Rolls Royce of door planes. A straight edge and bevel square and a block plane will get the job done, and the DIY’er will now go no longer uninformed.

Likable Door

Interior wood doors, as industry standards have it are 1 3/8″ thick. The stop moulding on any given interior door jamb is a plant-on trim mould that can be taken off and renailed elsewhere. During any rehabbing we have our eyes peeled and become conscious of our surroundings all the while gleaning new ideas. If that perfect, unique door turns up at a local garage sale but is a 1 3/4″ exterior door, don’t fret, it’s adaptable.                                                                                                        unique passage door

As you visualize this nugget in it’s new home it becomes even more perfect, after the stop mould is off the door is needing a little fitting per size, press against jamb and center in door opening, scribe the other side and plane down 5/16″ less then hole. Bevel edge cut 3 degrees with high side of bevel on the hinge side of door (side it opens into) on both edges. Use as much of the old and new hinge mortises with at least 3 hinges, 4 even better. The door should hang flush with the closed side of jamb so use your measuring and basic math skills to get it as close as you can.

2nd Floor bath Tile Floor

We recently got the job of tiling a upstairs bathroom floor. With the linoleum demoed off, we knew before hand that the height restriction were minimal. The owners selected the tile they wanted to use and we had to figure out how to install tile floor with a 3/8″ product and had to stay  built up a maximum of about 5/8″ total to finish floor. A 1/4″ backer board was first thought but we wanted to lay a moisture barrier and then thin set of coarse.expanded metal sub-float

So the remedy was to apply 2 layers of jumbotex paper first, rolled up behind the future baseboards,  then an expanded screen metal tight and flat, nailed 6″ o.c. throughout. Then with a  mortar mix, spread a well mixed batch completely covering the mesh metal, that gave us a strong water proofed, low profile cementitious substrate to adhere the thin set tile to. All the while keeping just under our elevation restrictions.

Pergo Laminate

The first company that wrote the book on how to install laminate flooring, Pergo is a brand name and not synonymous with laminate flooring, but one of the best products on the line in our opinion. They can be purchased everywhere and even offer repair kits for most lines.Pergo laminate flooring ply-plank

Damage to your Pergo floor such as scratches and mini indentations can be repaired using color fill kits, which you can purchase from your retailer. When more significant damage occurs, replacement of the damaged plank or square is an option. To avoid lots of future headaches just realize the importance of storing any unused pieces in a dry and no direct sunlight, safe place.

Custom Int. Door

The last time i checked there’s a correct or professional way to hang a door and then all the other ways. Now to some ignorance means just a lack of information, and hey let’s be honest here friends, who isn’t guilty of this? But this is a professional blog site so it would be extremely difficult to get any rest if we don’t put the truth down here.

Interior wood doorsaltered hollow core interior door should be hung correctly. And by this statement, if a 32″- 0, 6 panel door needs to be fitted into a 30- 1/2″ existing jamb opening then by all rights we want to take an equal 3/4″ off both the hinge side and the lock side of the door. If milled properly the 6 panel design should leave an equal margin reveal for professional aesthetics. A well hung door will have an equal reveal from outside edge of panel design to the outside edge of the door. Let’s get it right the first time!

Hollow Core Door

As interior wood doors are in every home across the world the common usage in the USA is a hollow core interior door. Built for strength as well as appearance, they have a wood frame that’s been reinforced around the lockset location and the hinge rails. 4 panel interior doorsActually a cardboard fiber substance in the middle for weight reasons with the ability to with stand a pretty good thrashing. and looks wise they are very popular for the price.

Most of our common home improvement centers can get these to us around $35.00 US, with several design patterns to choose from. Adding a third hinge helps the efficiency of their performance and many of these can be bought as a prehung package. The door and  jamb hinged together with the lockset hole pre-bored.

rolled putty around pop-up assembly

Like any progress in any adventure there comes a time that makes the turning point to fruition. On this bathroom renovation maybe today is that day, all the rough is in the walls and complete, drywall’s been sanded and primed with 2 coats of latex paint and today we set the vanity and sink. The bath basin is a self rimming style of plumbing fixtures.self rimming sink basin

With this style of bath sink, it will sit atop the finish counter top, this helps aide in keeping extra water off the counter in the sense that it sits a little taller than the top of the counter when the kids tend to be less vigilant with their usage here. And being a porcelain material the sealant around the drain, use plumbers putty (@ left) like rolled play-doh wrap it around the pop-up assembly drain cap and be generous the excess will just ooze out and wipe off later. A lot of these today are plastic below and can be tightened by hand. Lets now take some DAP sealant and apply around sink edge where it will seal atop the counter. As we eyeball the center and slowly lower into place and applying enough pressure to push any extra sealant out. Once everything has been assembled and the water is back on thoroughly test for any leaks and try tightening a little more first if there is a drip, before redoing this process again.

Seal Grout

We are golden and got all the tile set in the new shower/tub surround complete. So it’s time to now grout all of it and we went with a unsanded type. Even though our ceramic tiles in this bathroom will be notably grout less compared to some because we have actually put them in the butt together application, which essentially means little to no visible grout lines, we still need to use grout to fill any and all tiny voids to avoid any moisture from getting behind the surface of the tile’s.1/8" spacers (tile)

This illustration shows a 1/8″ tile spacer application, 1/4″ will be another typical set up. But there are tiles specifically designed to use with no spacers and some tiles you can use with or without the spacers if you would rather see less of those semi thick grout lines. This process will allow us to obtain about 1/16″ of grout with a color we choose that blends in more than stands out. Once the grout has dried and cured it will get a brushed on grout sealer that will aide in its longevity and hue.
