How To DIY Slab Leak

Wednesday, December 22, 2010
posted by Craig

In determining a leak in your system, the only absolute sure way for a decision to be made here, is to go straight to the source. The water service meter to your house monitors every drop that passes the gauge. When pouring a concrete slab foundation, the plumbing lines are trenched and placed in the ground prior to the concrete pour, as time progresses there is often several things that may have to occur or end up going wrong.
A visual inspection of the outside of your residence may aide in any abnormalities IE., wet areas near the exterior perimeters, higher than usual water bills, interior mold stench, warm places beneath the flooring etc. If you are experiencing any of these common issues, then before calling a plumbing contractor and getting invoiced for the trip, a final DIY leak test can be performed.
Turn off any and all appliances, dishwasher or washing machine. Check any and all the sinks faucets to be sure they are 100% in the off position. If any toilet is running because of needed repairs, then shut off their angle stop or (supply line) and if you are not alone then tell everyone else to please wait on flushing any toilets or washing any hands.

It is now time to find your water meter, typically on or near the street or curb. In the front of the property and in the ground. If you are absolutely positive that all fixtures/machines and spigots are off then the meter should not be moving/counting or digitally calculating the city or counties water passing through it. Chances are that this has assisted you in DIY leak detection.

When do you Call a Plumber?

Plumbing call out charges vary largely based on where you live and what time of day you require a plumber. Standard call out charges in a metro locality should not differ markedly between individual plumbers, as competition will ensure they remain competitive – though more experienced plumbers will typically charge more for their services. Most plumbers will stipulate a minimum call out charge, with an additional charge for parts and labour. Some may advertise no call out charge at all, but have considerably higher rates per hour.

24/7 Call Out Charges

After hours call out charges to effect emergency repairs will be charged at a premium. The most common emergency plumbing scenarios in the home include drain blockages, burst pipes, faulty hot water systems and broken taps.

Plumbing Qualifications

Plumbers are a licensed trade and typically undergo training under an apprenticeship system. This takes place, with practical and theory components, over a number of years during which trainees are paid for the work they undertake. They are governed by local or national plumbing codes which stipulate health and safety regulations to be followed, as well standards for products and materials utilised.

What to ask your plumber?

Before you hire a plumber, there are a few basic questions you can ask to ensure you receive the best service. These include:

* Are they licensed by the local plumbing authority?
* Are they registered with the local plumbing authority?
* Are they in possession of public liability insurance?
* What is their call out rate?
* What is their hourly rate?
* Do they provide detailed quotes?
* Do they have customer referrals?

Types Of Home Plumbing

Plumbers service a number of different areas in the home, including:

Maintenance – this includes repairs to all the plumbing fixtures in the home, such as tap ware, toilets and water heating systems

Renovations – this is an ever expanding source of business for plumbers as people expand or remodel their properties; with outdoor spas, luxurious bathrooms and a range of appliances for the kitchen

New builds – new homes need to be connected to the main water supply, as well as having the internal piping and fixtures installed

Green plumbing – the growth in all things green has seen solar hot water, rainwater tanks and grey water recycling systems become popular with customers looking to make savings and protect the environment

Guttering – having the correct guttering ensures that your roofing is not infiltrated, particularly during heavy rainfall or storms

3 way tub/ hot and cold + diverter

This is another way to view the 3-way tub / shower diverter fill spout, because with the valve body buried inside the framing [wall] you use and see the hot and cold handles, but the one in the middle is the diverter handle, it’s only function is to put water in the tub or after turning clockwise, closes the tub fill spout and diverts the water to the shower head.standard 3-way shower handle set-up's Where as the single handle set up will mix the hot and cold and require only the flip of a switch on the tub fill spout itself.single handle mixing valve

When the 3-way style has a blown valve stem seal, it will noticeably be losing water to the tub as you are trying to take your shower. Wasting water and driving up those utility bills and costing you dollars instead of making any sense. The diy area of this plumbing repair is just a pair of wrenches and a potential valve seat rebuild kit. Most of which anyone can obtain at HomeDepot, in the plumbing repair section. Matching the brand and model is always extremely helpful. If not simply removing the valve stem and having it with you while searching for the plumbing repair part is your next best choice.

Keeping in mind that most bathroom or kitchen remodels are the most lucrative remodeling projects for your investment dollar, when it comes time to sell and move onto the next one.

To limit your water consumption anywhere in the home the system will save you and you can help save our futures. A bath sink repair to fix a leaky faucet from a daily drip can be a tremendous savings. Test’s have been performed and the results are in, a Fix a Leak and SAVEleaking faucet wastes approximately 140 gallons of water resources a week, that’s right per only one week of time is 140 gallons. 52 weeks in one year equates to 7280 gallons per year. Every state and county will be not exactly the same per water delivered to your place of residence, via municipal plumbing. One thing that is certain is the fact that a $3.00 U.S. part and 2 hours of your time could make a huge impact on the budget for the betterment of your financial spreadsheets. And if nature continues to be on the paltry side of rain fall, we can all easily participate to save our precious resources.

Stop the Drip

Bath Sink Repair Tired of that steady drip drip drip? It could be something as simple as hard water deposits built up around the valve cartridge washer. In areas notorious for hard water IE some sections of Southern California, we’ve gotten the call to come check a leaking faucet for a bath sink repair. Low a behold after breaking the problem down came to realize this designer faucet contained rare and hard to find parts.                                                                                            faucet valve cartridge

Our suppliers said they could order the rebuild kits but would be (a week or so) some time to wait. The standard procedure for this type of repair is with the calcification build up we soak the valve components in white vinegar, that’s right this solution cleans like nothing else imaginable. The brass and porcelain become so clean they appear brand new. Typically soaking over night the faucet gets thoroughly inspected and then reassembled. Nothing gave us the incline that justified ordering the new kit and waiting. So putting it back together, the extensive testing resulting positive.
