Interior Patch

Once we have the new outlet in place and ready to be finished, it will require some DIY drywall work. Prepping the area in need of patching is a must. So clean out and around the hole with a shop vac or brush, get all the loose debris and dust off in, and around the surface.

The drywall mud has to be the consistency of a milkshake and free from any foreign particles. Use drywall tape to cover the edges (the fiberglass mesh tape works best in this type of application) of the new piece and existing surface, apply mud first then lay tape over the first coat of mud and knife smooth, let dry and add as many coats as needed. After some practice it will become quite easier. Some times a texture has to be applied, but often times the nap of the paint roller can be just right.

Ideas can come and go , but needs remain constant and ever changing. If that back door has been sticking and ready for repair, you surmised its time for new hinges, need will be carpentry tools. Start with the basics, a hammer, a sharp set of wood chisels, utility knife, and a pullsaw or handsaw.

For many smaller jobs the tools can be somewhat like grandpa had on the workbench too. A set of screwdrivers with the various tips IE flat head and Phillips in assorted sizes, as your experience abounds with home improvements then add more carpentry tools to the collection such as a cordless drill and a good portable power saw.logo

carpentry toolsWhile we will talk about how to install laminate flooring in a future posting, there are a few things to keep in mind before starting.  One is to acclimate your new flooring for at least 48 hours prior to installation as temperature and humidity can affect flooring planks.

Be sure to remove any plastic wrapping from the boxes and leave air space around each box to allow air to freely circulate around them. And be sure to purchase about 10% more flooring that the square footage of the room since you will waste some of it during cutting.

Architectural renderings reflect the foresight and creativity of their creators, but not every homeowner can afford to consult with experts. For those looking to undertake a DIY redesign, home design software is an indispensable resource. These programs allow homeowners to cut out the middle man, designing the room of their dreams without paying excessive consulting fees.

Home design software is especially useful because you’re never stuck having to compromise your personal design sense. You can make changes according to budget constraints and fluctuations in taste. More advanced programs even allow you to plan a room’s plumbing and electrical layout.

Preparing to Install a Wood Floor

Wood floors add a touch of class and livability to homes that carpeting just can’t deliver. A sturdy wood floor can be enjoyed for many generations, and its installation should never be taken lightly. If you plan on doing the job yourself, make sure to follow a few simple steps before beginning the process. Stack your flooring inside the home for a day or two; this allows the wood to either shrink or expand according to the home’s humidity level.

Next, double-check that you have a clean, level flooring base – whether it’s the old floor or a bare slab of concrete. Keep in mind that your new flooring might be significantly higher than the floor in adjoining rooms. If your floor is raised above the ground, locate the floor joists and plan to lay your wood in a perpendicular orientation. Make a mental or physical note of the joists’ locations for future reference. Now that you’ve done the prep work, installing wood flooring will be much less tedious.
