Many people use their basements as storage areas. The truth is that a dark, cobweb-filled, unfinished basement is a huge waste of valuable home space. To remedy this, you first need to sort through all the stuff that you store in your basement and toss anything you haven’t used in two years, excluding keepsakes. We all hang onto things we don’t use just because it takes extra effort to get rid of them. Make the effort to round up all your junk and donate it to Goodwill, or have a garage sale and make some extra money.
You can put those garage sale bucks toward a basement remodel that will make all that space usable and valuable. Store anything you have leftover from your sorting in the garage, backyard shed or heated storage and get to work on making this space livable. You may need to install vinyl flooring, insulation and drywall, and integrate lighting for a more homelike feel. Once you’re finished, add furniture to turn your basement into a family room, playroom or hobby area. If your basement has a separate entrance, you may even be able to rent it out to a college student for a little side income!
