Sharpening Hand Saws

Thursday, February 10, 2011
posted by DI-Myself

Just like kitchen knives, hand saw blades require sharpening or they become ineffective. To maintain your blades you will need a few hand saw sharpening tools including a saw file, a saw set, and softwood. Start by positioning the blade between softwood pieces so the teeth are exposed, but not much else of the blade. With a saw file- a triangle shaped object- file the teeth with firm, even strokes. Take your time as this part of the process can be difficult.

Next, you’ll want to take out your other hand saw sharpening tools for setting the teeth. The saw set is a cast iron tools that looks like a set of pliers and is used to set the right kerf width. Squeeze the handles of the saw set together and a pre-set plunger forces the tooth against a wheel-shaped anvil. Do this for all the teeth until the blade looks the way it did when it was brand new. A quality blade, when properly cared for, will last you many years.

Lets call out a formica counter top redo, the budget for now wont get any tile done so a quick fix is a new laminate. One of the first laminate tools is the router. And the Bosch PR20EVSK Colt has a palm grip 5.7 amp 1-horsepower compact versatility to get the job done right. With a variable speed trigger on a fixed base, this is one of many we recommend. It’s 110v that plugs in anywhere for that effective trim job on virtually any laminate surface. The other beautiful feature here is it’s versatility to fast switch into almost any of your other router bits. But compact enough to see what is taking place for a cleaner finished project. The Bosch PR20EVSK Colt Variable Speed Router with Edge Guide is a versatile tool that’s ideal for performing custom carpentry, trimming laminate flooring or deck planks, mortising hinges, dovetailing, and a host of other at-home and professional jobs. This router packs big power in a small, compact package for extended comfort and maximum accuracy.

Tools of Carpentry

One of many important carpentry tools in the home improvement industry is the Speed Square, this little nugget has given back in so many facets of carpentry that if you know how to use it, it will almost hold a conversation with the owner. From all aspects of free hand cutting to the finer points of stair layout and roof rafters.

The Speed Square of carpentry

The top has a 7″ ruler for any basic metrics needed like all square’s , but when on pivot it allows the pitch cut to enable the corresponding or related angle degrees. Say your plans call out a 7/12 roof common slope, well that means that for every 12″ of span the rise equates to 7″. So the speed square shows the 7/12 common cut all the while giving the angle or bevel too. Once this has been established the 45 degree, in which a hip or valley rafter for roofs rises the same but at a slower rate because of the angle. Sounds complicated maybe, but the Speed Square shows exact formula’s for all and any pitch or slope. Also available is the Big 12 version of the same square, the trade off for a framing square.

Detail’s

Perhaps the things that appear on the surface are not always what they seem. But when a job falls short of expectation’s in our minds it’s relative to unfinished business. How to install ceramic tile properly is the easy segment here but how to incorporate the other elements involved and do it as if we were never ever even there is the goal.Notching jamb over flooring When this detail has been left undone it never looks ok in the eye of an artist, ceramic tile up against the base boards or door jamb with an added element of a grout line vs. the jamb and base boards sitting atop the flooring and appearing a finished professional product. Would we ever consider tiling up to the toilet as opposed to pulling the loo and tiling to the waste flange first with the toilet now sitting above our tile floor? Exactly our thoughts, do it right the first time or don’t do it at all.new flooring under existing jamb and casing (done right)!

Stop Mould

To conclude this mini series on interior doors it’s important to note the door stop is your best friend. Inanimate sure but an ally all the way to the paint job. The hinge side on the jamb will have to be held away 3/16″ or so to allow the swing clearance from the door.interior door stop

The minute gap here does become closed as it raps around the jamb to the other side of the leg all the way to the floor. Lock side of door is a 1/16″ or essentially tight. As the door closes the stop mould hides the crack between the doors edge and face of jamb for visual, now closed the door and look at the door around the jamb, this side of the jamb in the closed and latched spot, the door should be flush with the edge of the jamb and slightly resting against the door stop mould on the other side. If not then this is where your ally, the door stop is tacked and adjusted for final nailing. This moulding can help the final door’s resting place.

To all my readers: technical specs will never superseed practical applications! It may confuse the brightest of brain’s, but only up to the point of actual hands on experience……..

To glue or?

Not to glue? This will depend on which brand of laminate flooring choice to go with and where it’ll be placed. Some of the products out recommend that the need for glued joints is a must in any room that will be getting wet.laminate flooring glue

Baths and kitchen areas for instance can get wet daily, so here is where the glue comes in. Read the instructions to determine what type of adhesive is applicable. Often those products will be in the same aisle’s as the flooring to be purchased, then simply follow the manufactures steps. The glue acts as not only a adhesive for the joints but at the same time a sealer for standing moisture not to be allowed to penetrate and cause future damage.

Start Anywhere

Ideas can come and go , but needs remain constant and ever changing. If that back door has been sticking and ready for repair, you surmised its time for new hinges, need will be carpentry tools. Start with the basics, a hammer, a sharp set of wood chisels, utility knife, and a pullsaw or handsaw.

For many smaller jobs the tools can be somewhat like grandpa had on the workbench too. A set of screwdrivers with the various tips IE flat head and Phillips in assorted sizes, as your experience abounds with home improvements then add more carpentry tools to the collection such as a cordless drill and a good portable power saw.logo
