Copper/Galvenize metal electrolosis

Friday, December 30, 2011
posted by Craig

Electrolysis is an often misused term when applied to copper plumbing tubing. True electrolysis, or electrolytic corrosion, as it is more properly designated with regard to piping, is caused by an imposed (external) stray DC current and  happens when 2 or more different metals touch IE., copper and steel plumbing components. In many cases, it is also thought that grounding of a building’s electrical system to the copper piping can cause this phenomenon, but there is no statistical data to support this, nor is it recommended that the piping system be used as the main electrical ground for a building or dwelling.

Usually, what people are really referring to when they say electrolysis is galvanic or dissimilar metal corrosion. Galvanic corrosion is caused by self-induced current created by electrical potential of two dissimilar metals in contact with an electrolyte. It can occur when two dissimilar metals (such as copper tube and steel pipe) are connected in the presence of an electrolyte.

Stainless steel , Brass and Copper, all common metal piping materials and how they react to each other, it is rarely the copper tube that fails because of galvanic corrosion. Black steel and Galvanized steel when connected to the other metals above , will start an eating away by corrosion until sooner than later a leak in your plumbing pipes will occur. Do it right the first time!

3 way tub/ hot and cold + diverter

This is another way to view the 3-way tub / shower diverter fill spout, because with the valve body buried inside the framing [wall] you use and see the hot and cold handles, but the one in the middle is the diverter handle, it’s only function is to put water in the tub or after turning clockwise, closes the tub fill spout and diverts the water to the shower head.standard 3-way shower handle set-up's Where as the single handle set up will mix the hot and cold and require only the flip of a switch on the tub fill spout itself.single handle mixing valve

When the 3-way style has a blown valve stem seal, it will noticeably be losing water to the tub as you are trying to take your shower. Wasting water and driving up those utility bills and costing you dollars instead of making any sense. The diy area of this plumbing repair is just a pair of wrenches and a potential valve seat rebuild kit. Most of which anyone can obtain at HomeDepot, in the plumbing repair section. Matching the brand and model is always extremely helpful. If not simply removing the valve stem and having it with you while searching for the plumbing repair part is your next best choice.

Keeping in mind that most bathroom or kitchen remodels are the most lucrative remodeling projects for your investment dollar, when it comes time to sell and move onto the next one.

DIY tub spout diverter repair

Hey, tired of the way this economy seems to keep dragging? Let’s face the facts folks, every penny adds to a dollar and so on and so forth…. now take the water bill IE, it can be lowered within a few well invested penny’s on a daily count and of course this goes back to that ever elusive dollar again.diy tub diverterbathtub to shower valve

Your bathtub / shower combo has a diverter that when pulled slightly upward stops the tub fill and redirects the water to the shower head. IF the diverter is in proper order it will not allow little , if any water going into the tub. Rather when it’s ready to be replaced or repaired, the volume of water going up and out the shower head has been significantly decreased, because the diverter seal is not sealing 100% and losing/wasting gallons of water straight to the drain below. The end result is more time for rinsing off and higher water/utility bills. The rough plumbing 1/2′ nipple holds the tub spout in place and is very easily screwed off by spinning counter clockwise [lefty loosy-righty tighty] and replacing with a new energy efficient one. Although some replacement parts are available at some of your better home improvement stores in the do-it yourself plumbing repair section, if need be.

The real estate crisis has gutted house prices, tipped millions into foreclosure, and rattled the global economy to its core. But for many would-be home buyers, the historic boom and bust have been a blessing in disguise. During the first half of the previous decade, easy credit and speculative excitement worked to make houses increasingly expensive. By the fourth quarter of 2005, median home prices had reached 2.77 times median household incomes. That is sharply higher than the 1.92 average of the 15 years ending in 2003 and too expensive for many families. But the subsequent crash in home prices–values have fallen roughly 30 percent at the national level from their 2006 peaks–has helped restore affordability to this once inflated market. By the third quarter of 2009, the price-to-income ratio–a key measure of housing affordability–had fallen below its 15-year average, to 1.84 for the nation as a whole.

Core Hole drilling ceramic tile

Preference has it’s values, and of coarse the hole of a preferred spot in your shower, the easy way out is to locate this between the grout lines. But if your like us we want it accomplished correctly every time. And the correct spot is smack dab center of that center piece of ceramic tile about 84″ up. But to do this you will have to obtain a diamond tipped coring bit, the diameter of your shower head’s plumbing of choice. Consistently 3/4″ outside dimension for the finish neck part, we suggest a 1″ bit to give you allowable play. Most will come with a escushion ring in the same finish IE., chrome, brush nickle etc.diamond pilot bitcore drilling masonry bitdiamond coring cutter tipped w/pilot bitYou may be suited best by pre drilling the center pilot hole before hand, this will ensure it’s accuracy and insurance in an existing bath remodel application, for the beginners. Otherwise there are variable options at your local home improvement centers, when you cant get one online. High speed rpm, in your drill and by applying a constant [not over doing it] pressure, spray water slowly and let the blades do the cutting. Be patient and alert as to when its going to finish cutting. You must heed this point, you won’t want any cutting going on inside your walls after you have completed the tile and mortar bore.

repair running toilet

How many times in or life times will we have to repair running toilet, hey does it really matter? The point is nobody really wants to deal with this stuff but all of life’s burdens are kind of a blessing in disguise. Even the most important man of his time ended up getting sucked into something he did not want to do, and with that being said the real only other alternative is having to be no longer here! Seriously though, if it’s not a toilet maybe it’ll be something with the car or possibly a conflict with another country on a much larger scale. I’m saying our coping mechanisms, as humans do most of the work and to put into perspective, our perceptions of truly just how horrible a little out of the way trouble is’nt mostly that bad at all. At least you still have your brain to aide in most predicaments good or bad, some lesser fortune individuals only dream they had the gift to solve anything, let alone a more often time’s than not, simple toilet that won’t stop leaking! Be grateful and persevere and dream of way better tomorrow’s….Be happy and repair that running toilet, it could be way worse, right?

Bath Sink Supply Lines

A bath sink repair does not always have to be a major deal for the DIYer, if wetness appears inside the bottom of the cabinet and you have phoned the plumber, lets say. They show up when they can and about 20 minutes later, tell you they have it fixed and a minimum charge of $125.00 is applicable, with a material bill added on for $26.00 more seems as if it really helped you out of a fix maybe at the time?sink repair supply line big IDEA bulbThe big IDEA here folks, is you CAN do this yourself once you believe it’s true, and god love an honest plumber! Please don’t get me wrong, but not all bath sink repairs need you to call the guy. A flashlight and a small adjustable wrench with an extra hour, could have saved you $151.00 dollars. A online purchase or trip to Home Depot gets you the $12.00 supply line part worst case scenario. And to keep it simple, after seeing whats going on down there, you turned the water off, disconnected 2 nuts and reversed the process when you got the part……..YOU CAN DIY!
